It Can Wait®: A Campaign To Stop Texting While Driving

With more than enough distractions to keep Georgia drivers from focusing on the road, texting while driving is increasingly becoming a big temptation for drivers, especially teens. According to OnlineSchools.com, 13% of drivers ages 18-20 involved in car wrecks admitted to texting or talking on their mobile devices at the time of the crash. Studies have shown that texting while driving increases your chances of crashing by 23 times.

In 2008, an online survey reported Georgia had the third-highest rate in the nation for drivers who text behind the wheel and shockingly, 37% of Georgia drivers admitted to texting while driving.

More Stats About Texting & Driving

Texting while driving is illegal in Georgia!

As a result of increased distracted driver accidents, a 2010 Georgia law prohibited texting while driving. It is illegal to write, send, or read any text communication including text messages, instant messages, email, and Internet data while driving a motor vehicle.

This includes texting at stoplights! All mobile phone use is banned for bus drivers and drivers under the age of 18. Violation of the law is a misdemeanor punishable by one point on the driver’s license and up to a $150 fine.

Despite these new Georgia laws, drivers continue to drive distracted. Enforcement of the law is difficult as police officers have to determine whether the driver of a moving vehicle is texting. We all need to help urge our friends and families to stop this dangerous activity.

How do we stop texting while driving in Georgia?

A national campaign called It Can Wait® is focused on educating people, especially teenagers, about the dangers of texting while driving.
