How to Avoid Accidents Over the Memorial Day Holiday

MemorialDay-pl1az09dre195qopn7sekxajwedejl4wudk2neo808

Memorial Day is just around the corner, and you’re ready to have fun and relax. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe and avoid auto accidents and more while you enjoy your much-deserved holiday. Don’t forget to also take time to honor the men and women who died while serving in the line of duty.

Don’t drink and drive. Pick a sober driver, use public transportation, or take a ride-share service (like Lyft or Uber).

Be cautious on the road. Whether you’re driving around Macon on I-16 or I-75, or even out of town, it’s important to stay alert. Be extra careful if you’re going through construction zones. Watch those speed limit signs as well. It can be tough to spot bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists, so keep a close eye out. Always give large trucks plenty of space. Their blind spots are bigger than you might think.

Watch out for other bad drivers. Pay attention to the people driving around you in case they’re driving dangerously. Whether it’s from lack of sleep, alcohol or drugs, or texting while driving, other people can put you in danger even when you’re playing it safe.

Relax. Holiday weekends usually have lots of traffic, so don’t get in a big hurry. You’ll also see more people from out of town, and they won’t be familiar with the roads. Be a friendly driver and give them some extra space. This way, they’re less likely to cause an accident if they realize they’re about to miss their exit.

Stay safe in and on the water. Memorial weekend attracts many visitors to Georgia’s local gems like Lake Lanier, Lake Oconee, the Ocmulgee River, the Chattahoochee River, and Macon’s Amerson River Park. Never drive a boat or a jet ski if you’ve been drinking alcohol. Wear a life jacket, and watch out for poisonous snakes on the water. Don’t forget about the kids—make sure your children are good swimmers and educate them about water safety. Crowded pool parties can also be dangerous, so keep an eye out for everyone’s kids to help keep them safe.

Respect the outdoors. It’s HOT here in Middle Georgia in May! Don’t let dehydration or heatstroke ruin your holiday. Drink lots of water, and don’t be afraid to enjoy the shade or the indoor air conditioning. Apply sunscreen often so you can avoid sunburns (and skin cancer). Don’t forget the bug spray either.

Stay away from spoiled food. Picnics and backyard barbecues are lots of fun! Be careful to avoid eating or serving food that’s been sitting out too long. Food poisoning is no joking matter and no way to start your week back at work.
