New Study Sheds Light on Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) in New Ways

BrainInj2

There is no question that a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can not only have long-term negative effects on someone, but, according to a new study, it can lead to other chronic conditions as well. Specifically, in examining hundreds of patients who suffered traumatic brain injuries, researchers found that these chronic conditions can last for years, with some improving, but others declining at various points in time, and many of them experiencing issues with everyday functioning, memory, and thinking.

As a result, researchers encourage change when it comes to the perception of traumatic brain injuries; not as one single injury that occurs at one point in time, but as a condition subject to ups and downs, improvement and decline, through multiple years, and as a result, there is a need to establish systems of care and liability that involve monitoring and flexibility in our approach to them. The researchers describe traumatic brain injuries more as “unpredictable conditions” with unique consequences entirely based on the individual they affect.

Conditions Linked to TBIs

TBIs can range from mild to moderate to severe, including concussions, fractured skulls, penetrating injuries, and more. This particular study focused on memory, mental health, one’s ability to perform daily activities, thinking, fatigue, headaches, and sleep disturbances. Most of the decline over time associated with TBIs involved difficulty with everyday activities, such as caring for yourself, living without assistance, driving, and social activities.

Lifestyle & Demographic Factors

The research also indicated that when older individuals experienced TBIs, they were more likely to also experience decline in these activities over time, while more educated individuals were more likely to experience improvement after their TBI. In addition, the research indicated that overall health may play a part in whether someone recovers or declines after experiencing a TBI.
