Smart Driving This Summer

The windows are rolled down, music is blasting and you’re headed to the pool, lake, or beach for a relaxing weekend getaway. You don’t have a care in the world. However, vacation time does not mean that you should let your guard down while on the road.

With so many drivers on the interstates and back roads, summer is the most important time of year to be extra aware of the other drivers around you. August is considered the deadliest month for car and truck accidents, and Labor Day weekend is in the top 10 list of deadliest days.

Here are six tips for how to stay safe driving in the summer.

Protect your eyes

Sunglasses are not just a stylish accessory. They can save your life when the sun suddenly hits you in the face as you turn a corner. Make sure you keep sunglasses easily accessible in case the sun or road glare becomes too bright.

Watch your temperature gauge

The extra heat in the summer can cause your engine to overheat. If you see your temperature gauge ticking towards the danger zone, drive to a car repair shop immediately. If the gauge is already in the red zone, pull over and let your car cool down. An overheated engine is not something you want to play around with.

Prepare your car for the heat

Summer weather can cause serious car breakdowns, as your tires and engine work much harder in the heat. As the temperature increases, inspect your car. Make sure you have plenty of coolant, and that your hoses, tires and belts are in good shape.

Never drink and drive

There’s nothing like a cold beer on a hot afternoon. However, when behind the wheel, stick to water and soft drinks if you’re planning to drive. If you are going to drink, make sure you have a designated driver or a taxi ready to go. Remember that Macon and Warner Robins now have Uber, so don’t forget to download the app!

Leave your road rage at home

If someone is driving super slow in the left lane and your blood is boiling, just take a few deep breaths. Avoid the temptation to react, and you’ll avoid the chance of an accident. The lake will be just as fun, even if you arrive a few minutes later. Also, be aware of bicycles and motorcycles sharing the road with you during this time of year.

Pack smart

Every car and truck has a weight limit. You do not need to bring your whole closet and the kitchen sink with you. Check your car manual for the weight or towing limits before loading all of your suitcases and that big boat. As you load the car, make sure you can easily see out of each window.
