Personal Property: Is it Covered in a Wreck?

So, you’ve gotten yourself into a fender bender… or worse. You’ve assessed your personal damage, your car’s damage, and you realize; you just bought that really expensive TV and it was in your back seat during the accident. You have a moment of panic and think, “Is this covered?”

When These Accidents Happen

When you get into an accident and your personal belongings are involved and damaged, you’ll likely seek a way to replace or repair them.

Here are things to consider:

  1. Know your limits: When it comes to personal property, there are some limitations to what is covered. Groceries, personal/handheld electronics and other non-permanent items are not covered with auto insurance.

  2. Make your claim: Call your insurance company as soon as possible following the accident, letting them know who was at fault.

  3. Cover all bases: Did you take pictures of the accident? Did you reach out to the other party’s insurance company? You’ll need to make sure you have as much detail as possible. If you do receive anything from insurance, it will be in cash value.

  4. Prepare yourself: There’s a special type of coverage under insurance called Custom Parts and Equipment Coverage (CPE). You may want to consider this if you don’t already have it.

Don’t be discouraged. Things happen, but there are things you can look out for. If your car had custom items installed, you will likely be able to retrieve them with an insurance claim.
