What did you get for Christmas? Was it a brand new car? It’s exciting to get a new car and to be able to start the new year off with new wheels, but before getting too excited, you need to make sure your purchase is safe and worth the price tag. In the last few years, many companies have had recalls of vehicles due to malfunctions and safety hazards. General Motors alone has had 60 recalls this year, which is equivalent to nearly 29 million vehicles around the world.1

What to Do In the Case of a Recall

When a recall happens, usually it is due to one part, such as an airbag or the brakes of a car, malfunctioning. With this in mind, you should be aware that your whole car will not get fixed in the case of a recall, but simply the part that is not working properly. You should receive a letter in the mail if your car is on the recall list that describes items such as the defect, warning signs and how long it will take until your car is repaired. Next steps include following instructions that should be included in the letter and contacting your local dealer for a repair appointment. Tires are items that typically must be repaired very quickly, so pay attention to the date.

In the Case I’m Not Contacted

If you were not contacted via letter, simply look on the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website or call 1-888-327-4236. If you feel that you are not being taken care of or that your recall or repair request is not being heard, make sure to contact the lawyers and Buzzell, Welsh and Welsh. We will ensure that you get the representation and repairs you need.
